How Mother Figures Impact Our Lives
  + stars: | 2024-05-09 | by ( Catherine Pearson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +13 min
For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives. KELLY SANDOVAL, 48, SQUAMISH, B.C., CANADAI come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother.

Surfing the web in the 1990s and early 2000s was a slower endeavor, and fewer people had access to the technology. Those robust online forums have since been flattened into algorithmic social media feeds or hidden on messaging apps, a shift mourned by several video games with a shared fondness for bygone internet eras. Games like last year’s Videoverse, 2019’s Hypnospace Outlaw and the upcoming Darkweb Streamer use chat interfaces akin to AIM or MSN, as well as fake websites that greet people with MIDI songs and text written in bold fonts. Each experience has its own nostalgic lens but is a snapshot of lost expression, creativity and independence. Chantal Ryan, an anthropologist and the lead developer of Darkweb Streamer, a horror simulation game that merges the perils of modern streaming with the ’90s internet, bemoaned how high-quality independent services were often cannibalized by corporate interests.

Once I tried out the line “Remember who you were before you had a permanent address.” The client scoffed. At the time I lived in a converted garage by a cemetery, the third place I’d moved in a year. The restaurant was unexceptional — plastic chairs, coarse tablecloths, low guttering candles — and perfect. In the maze of the old quarter, we sat at a table outside, on stone stairs descending from another century. We were in Churchill, a town of roughly 900 people nicknamed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” in Canada’s Manitoba province. A male polar bear rests during a Tundra Buggy ride into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in August. People have to learn to co-exist with polar bears in Churchill, where some of them stay waiting for sea ice to refreeze. Hudson Bay polar bears are among the most vulnerable on Earth because of loss of sea ice, with their numbers in sharp decline. They arrive as soon as the sea ice breaks up to feast on small fish called capelin that spawn here.

Montecito is where Gwyneth Paltrow goes when the pressures of Brentwood are too much. Jennifer Aniston bought a $16.5 million property from Ms. Winfrey, who had not had time to use it. But it’s not just the famous who come to Montecito, it’s also the straight-up rich. Montecito is loaded with the less-recognizable names behind very recognizable things, including Ty Warner, the press-shy inventor of Beanie Babies, who lives in a rose-colored mansion with views of the whole landscape. It’s a dizzying combination of old wealth, new wealth and outrageous physical beauty that has begun to attract an ever-wider range of dreamers.

The shift from bird imagery to an "X" is the latest sweeping change since Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last year. The latest changes come as the social media giant continues to face competition from Meta's new app, Threads, which launched earlier this month.
